ANALYSIS

Sometimes the stuff around your mai really leaves me drained just from reading it

1. Why do machines still occasionally lose connection now#

Straight to the point. You may have run into this: the machine inexplicably loses connection, your score doesn’t save, and when you open the maimai status-check website the server is still alive. Why? The machine swallowed a cookie.

Simply put, after the server maintenance, a new cookie (also called a biscuit) was added to the server as an auxiliary means of account verification. When you get on a machine, the server gives the machine a cookie, and when you get off, you need to bring that cookie with you to log out successfully. But sometimes, for some reason on the server side (a bug?), the cookie fails to be issued, and yet at this point the account is already logged in. That’s cookie swallowing. Without the cookie, there is naturally no way to log out of the account, so you end up in the black box.

TIP

If you still don’t get it

Think of the cookie as a subway ticket: you normally need a ticket to get in, right, and you need the same ticket to get out.

Cookie swallowing is like getting through the turnstile without a ticket on the way in, then not being able to get out without a ticket: your maimai account is stuck in the subway station (in the black box)

If the connection loss is caused by cookie swallowing, the simplest and most effective fix is to ask the arcade staff to restart the machine; if allowed, you can also flip the switch behind the 滴蜡熊 to restart it

This is actually a bug, and in principle the Japanese side should fix it

3. Why is it still unstable after the “stability update”#

There are many reasons. In fact, after the server maintenance, the CN server’s account verification mechanism is far more secure than the international server’s. Essentially, 1.53 was an upgrade and optimization aimed at accounts.

We have no way of knowing where the cookie swallowing comes from; after all, the maimai architecture is an old pile of shit that has been running for many years, and the fact that the Japanese side could turn it into this is actually not bad. It was already a late-stage lung cancer old man with a bunch of tubes stuck in him; if you insist on operating on him, what happens if he dies on the table?

4. About Wahlap buying server protection#

Fact. Wahlap did buy Tencent Cloud’s EdgeOne service to protect against malicious traffic attacks. Occasionally when you open the official WeChat account, an edgeone prompt may pop up and block your access; that’s actually you being mistaken for a malicious program

Put plainly, Wahlap hired a few tough guys (in the suggestive sense) to watch the server door, but the tough guys mistook you for a thief and won’t let you in

There’s really no way around this either; you can’t lay all the blame on Tencent Cloud or Wahlap across the board, since it’s inherently a hard technical problem to solve

5. Why does the official WeChat account keep blowing up lately#

The cause really is unknown. My suggestion is to wait for official news (but given Wahlap’s style, they’ll probably play dead — just a guess)

6. What is the maimai black box#

Every maimai login must strictly correspond to one logout, and under normal play all scores are uploaded at once and the logout is performed only after the results screen. If the logout doesn’t succeed, the account is then occupied and can’t be played normally; the machine shows a fifteen-minute popup. Hence the name black box

7. About getting out of the maimai black box, and why you can’t now#

I can say responsibly that as of now there is no way to get out of the black box; all previously existing methods have stopped working.
Previously, logging an account out on the server only required knowing your login time; now it requires verification with information such as the cookie

TIP

An analogy

Getting out of the black box used to mean guessing your entry time one by one at the exit; guess right and you’re out

Now the subway exit requires an extra ticket check, but they never issued you the ticket, so you’re trapped inside and it becomes the black box

8. Conclusion#

After reading this, you probably have a rough understanding of the various recent maimai issues. As a player, it’s perfectly normal to get angry and curse when you lose connection without knowing why; this article was written to clear up your confusion, and you can ask further questions in the comments. Still, I hope everyone pays a bit more attention to themselves in daily life; it’s just a game, for entertainment, and there’s no need to put it above the rest of your life.

Of course, happy New Year to everyone as well. Smooth work, success in studies — good health and happiness always come first

9. Appendix#

I’d also like to make a statement here: I (Chongxi) have never cooperated with any third-party organization, nor do I have any commercial activity. Whether writing the blog or making tools, I’m just someone who knows a bit about computers and wants to contribute to the community out of love. We all love this game anyway, so there’s no need to argue over these things
